Organizations that measure and manage sustainability performance have a global competitive edge. Addressing the sustainability issues along with the environmental, social, and economic values would accelerate the transition towards a sustainable planet.

Check how VNV connected with TraceX to digitize their paddy cultivation process with our Blockchain-powered traceability solution, thereby driving sustainable agriculture practices to foray into carbon offsetting and solving the global climatic distress.

Sustainable Agriculture Practices in Rice cultivation

India has the world’s largest rice cultivated area with over 65% population consuming rice as a staple food. Rice irrigation consumes almost 30% of the world’s freshwater resources.

Added to this water crisis, irrigated rice production emits the greenhouse gas methane to a large extent.

System of Rice Intensification Program (SRI), aims to develop a system of improved water management that reduces methane emissions by 30% compared to the traditional practices.

With the growing population and demand for increased rice production, the area under rice cultivation may reduce substantially and this needs to be addressed by increasing the rice yield with reduced resources.

SRI includes a method called Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) which is a form of controlled irrigation of rice crops.

The farmers alternate cultivation practices from continuous flooding to intermittent flooding, thereby reducing the methane emissions.

VNV Advisory services have been a pioneer in working with climate change and farmer livelihoods. They have been developing low-carbon projects to support these communities to meet their basic needs and mitigate the impact of climate change on agriculture. VNV addresses issues of Environmental Sustainability and Carbon Neutrality with the support of organizations.

Challenges that VNV faces

VNV works with an NGO Shriram Education and Welfare Society in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra across 6 taluks and over 12000 farmers and 30 FPOs. They ensure balance in the agriculture ecosystem with sustainable development and reduced carbon interventions.

  • Farm Management
  • Crop management for the Irrigation process
  • Lack of agronomy knowledge in farmer communities
  • Lack of digitization in pre-harvest management

VNV connects with TraceX to digitize their paddy cultivation process with a Blockchain-powered traceability solution, thereby driving sustainable agriculture practices to foray into carbon offsetting and solving the global climatic distress.

TraceX’s Solutions

VNV adopts our FOODSIGN application to solve the problems in the paddy value chain.

The field supervisors at this NGO use our application to digitize the paddy cultivation process.

The farm management and crop management modules help in streamlining the pre-harvest processes.

The Paddy Pre-harvest journey

The farmers are onboarded using the multi-lingual mobile app

The farms are mapped in the geo-spatial environment

The crop details are configured through the mobile app

The irrigation practices are configured, specifically the water consumption with timelines.

The harvest timelines are configured for easy monitoring and timely alerts.

VNV benefits from TraceX’s Solutions

VNV leverages TraceX’s blockchain-powered traceability solutions to realize farm and crop digitization and the ability to track their AWD irrigation practices.

This helps them in their journey toward GHG mitigation, adoption of sustainable agriculture practices, and empowering the farmers with a promising future with enhanced crop yields and a reduction in costs.

VNV and TraceX inch closer towards the Sustainable Development goals.
