Strengthening Tur Value Chains with End-to-End Food Traceability for TechnoServe India

TechnoServe India’s Project Bhumi is designed to transform agricultural value chains by empowering agri-households especially women through regenerative practices, market access, and technology-led transparency. To support this vision in the tur (pigeon pea) value chain, TechnoServe partnered with TraceX to implement an end-to-end food traceability solution that could operate reliably in remote, smallholder-dominated regions while meeting sustainability and ethical sourcing objectives.

About the Company

The Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in TechnoServe is a non-profit organization that works for the upliftment of these farmers from the dire straits of poverty. Working across countries, TechnoServe links people, information, and capital ensuring prosperity and wellbeing of all communities represent collectives of small and marginal apple growers united under a common vision   to strengthen farm-level productivity, market access, and sustainability. These producer-owned entities play a crucial role in empowering local farmers by enabling collective decision-making, shared access to resources, and improved bargaining power in the marketplace.

The Challenge

Project Bhumi operates across dispersed rural landscapes where smallholder farmers face multiple structural barriers: 

  • Limited traceability at the farm level, making it difficult to link produce to specific farmers or plots 
  • Poor network connectivity, restricting real-time data capture in remote areas 
  • Manual and fragmented crop activity records, reducing visibility into on-farm practices 
  • Weak linkage between farm production, procurement, and inventory, increasing data gaps and inefficiencies 

Without a robust digital backbone, it was challenging to establish credible farm-to-market traceability, demonstrate ethical sourcing, and scale sustainability outcomes across the tur value chain.

Solutions

TraceX implemented its Food Traceability Solution to digitize the tur value chain from the first mile through procurement and inventory.

Key solution components included: 

  • Smallholder farmer onboarding with geo-tagged plots 
    Farmers were digitally profiled and their plots mapped using GPS, creating a verified spatial foundation for traceability and sustainability tracking. 
  • Offline-first data capture 
    TraceX’s offline capability enabled seamless data collection in low- and no-network areas, ensuring continuity of records without dependence on connectivity. 
  • Crop activity tracking from pruning to harvest 
    On-farm activities were recorded digitally, creating a time-stamped, auditable trail of crop practices linked to specific plots and batches. 
  • Batch-level traceability 
    Harvested tur was linked to batches at the farm level, maintaining traceability through aggregation and movement. 
  • QR-code–based procurement and inventory management 
    Procurement events, Goods Receipt Notes (GRNs), and inventory movements were digitized using QR codes, enabling accurate tracking from collection to storage.
