Empowering Native Sugarcane Farmers with TraceX Farm Digitization Solutions
Sugarcane is one of India’s most important cash crops, supporting nearly 50 million farmers and dependents and forming the backbone of the country’s second-largest agro-based industry after textiles. Maharashtra, with its favourable tropical climate and long growing season, is among India’s leading sugarcane-producing states. However, decades of conventional farming practices heavy dependence on synthetic fertilizers and residue burning have degraded soil health, reduced yields, and increased vulnerability to climate stress.
To address these challenges, VNV with their implementation partner Shramjivi Janata Sahayyak Mandal (SJSM) initiated a VCS Sustainable Agricultural Land Management (SALM) project across 20,000 hectares in Sangli and Kolhapur districts, aiming to transition native sugarcane farmers toward regenerative and sustainable cultivation practices.
TraceX platform was deployed as the digital backbone to track farm inputs, monitor adoption, and enable transparent sustainability reporting.
