Agroecology

What is agroecology?

Agroecology is an approach to farming that applies ecological principles to agricultural systems. It focuses on creating sustainable, resilient farming practices by integrating natural ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, and fostering harmonious relationships between plants, animals, and the environment.

How does agroecology differ from conventional agriculture?

Unlike conventional agriculture, which often relies on synthetic chemicals, monocultures, and high-input practices, agroecology emphasizes natural processes, diversity, and local knowledge. It seeks to minimize external inputs, improve soil health, and enhance ecosystem services to create more sustainable and resilient farming systems.

What are the main principles of agroecology?

The main principles of agroecology include promoting biodiversity, improving soil health through organic matter and conservation practices, minimizing external inputs like synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, using integrated pest management, and supporting local knowledge and farmer participation in decision-making.

How does agroecology benefit the environment?

Agroecology benefits the environment by enhancing soil fertility, reducing erosion, conserving water, and increasing biodiversity. By working with natural processes, agroecological practices help maintain ecosystem functions and services, reduce pollution, and mitigate climate change through improved carbon sequestration and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

What are some examples of agroecological practices?

Examples of agroecological practices include crop rotation, intercropping, cover cropping, agroforestry, and organic farming. These methods help build soil health, manage pests naturally, conserve water, and support diverse ecosystems within agricultural landscapes.
