Geographical Indications (GI) Certification

GI protection in Indonesia is regulated under Law 15 of 2001 regarding trademarks,Chapter VII of which provides for protection of GIs and sources of origin. Article56 (1): “GIs shall be protected as signs indicating the place of origin of goods, which, due to geographical and environmental factors, including the factor of nature, people or a combination of the two, gives a specific characteristic and quality to the good produced there.” A certificate of GI protection for Kintamani Bali Arabica coffee issued by the Directorate General for Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights on 5 December 2008. “Kopi Arabika Kintamani Bali” is thus the first GI- protected product in Indonesia.

Farmer Group / Abian Subak

Abian Subak is a Balinese words refer to a traditional union of a farmer group works together in a coffee plantation at the mountainous area with a facilitation of processing unit from the local government under co-operative system and works together under the TriHita Karana philosophy. Every Abian Subak has its own name and Tri Guna Karya is one of the famous and active group which initiated the establishment of the GI and has planted coffee since 1998
